My husband owns and operates a coffee shop in town. You’d be surprised how much you can learn about a town from a barber, a bartender, or the fellow who serves you coffee and a breakfast sandwich. From all the gossip these folks hear daily, they could probably predict the winners on election day and certainly develop a strong sense of who in the town can be trusted and counted on.
We had been running the coffee shop for eight years, commuting two hours a day. It was finally time to purchase a house in Southold. I figured it would be difficult for Erik to select a realtor from all of the acquaintances and true friends he has met in the business.
Actually, it wasn’t. For Erik, there was only one option: Tom McCarthy.
Sure, there was gentle pressure from all directions, but when my husband and I sat down in Tom’s office, I knew that Erik’s instinct was spot on. Tom was going to show us homes instead of houses. He was going to locate a situation that was right for us, not a property he was itching to close a deal on.
Erik has known him for years, but other than first names, Tom and I did not know each other. So we sat down. We talked. Actually, Erik and I talked; Tom listened. Another brief question, then he listened. He got to know as a couple, and came to learn our intentions for the next phase of life. Tom developed a sense of our needs as I developed a sense of trust in a person who did more listening than fast talking.
Tom McCarthy showed us one house. Only one house, and we bought it. Seriously. He turned the key, let us enter first, I looked at Erik and Erik looked at me. Sold. Seriously. I mean, we didn’t tell Tom that of course. Go on, show us the closets, do your thing. But sold. Seriously.
In our case, Tom listened so well that he knew which property was right for our home. It suited our imagination, our family’s plans, as well as our financial situation. We made an offer on the very first and only home in Southold that we looked at. For another buyer I would say, take your time-- this is a big decision.
For me, I was sold on the realtor first: Tom McCarthy. We took our time selecting an agent and the rest was easy. So we’ve had our first Christmas, our first snowstorms, and our gardens have offered their first blooms for us to enjoy. Tom has been only a phone call a way when questions have come up. Tom McCarthy Real Estate was right for us. I hope this note serves its simple purpose---
