Cutchogue

Cutchogue

Derived from an Algonquin word meaning "principal place", Cutchogue has a rich history. Native Americans lived at Fort Corchaug before settlers began arriving in 1640. The Old House, which sits on the Village Green, is a National Historic Landmark. Built in 1649, it is one of the best surviving examples of English domestic architecture in the United States.

Called “The Sunniest Spot in New York State,” by National Geographic, Cutchogue is a special place, not only to its 3,500 year-round inhabitants, but also to the many visitors who flock to this historic hamlet each summer.

One summer visitor was Albert Einstein, who called Little Peconic Bay at Cutchogue, "the most beautiful sailing ground I ever experienced." In 1938 and 1939 Einstein rented a cottage on Nassau Point, a picturesque cape located in Cutchogue.

Cutchogue is also the birthplace of Long Island Wines. Hargrave Vineyard, the first winery on Long Island, was established in Cutchogue in 1973. There is something for everyone in this unique hamlet, including restaurants, wineries, and boutique shops along Main Street.

Nestled among the many historic homes are beautiful golf courses, tennis courts, and bicycling opportunities. The hamlet’s many creeks, with access to the Peconic Bay, offer incredible opportunities for canoeing, paddle boarding, fishing and boating. Cutchogue is home to an elementary school which serves the Mattituck/Cutchogue School District and the North Fork’s only private elementary school, Our Lady of Mercy.
