With a year-round population of less than 1,500 residents, it is said that Laurel is “so quiet, you can hear the grapes grow.”
First called Middle District or Middle Ground, the hamlet of Laurel straddles the Towns of Southold and Riverhead. This small community was later named Franklinville, in a nod to Benjamin Franklin, but residents finally settled on Laurel after it was discovered that there was already another Franklinville in New York State. Although a portion of Laurel is located in the Town of Riverhead, it is the western-most hamlet within the Town of Southold and the gateway to the North Fork.
Laurel continues to maintain its rural charm, with only a post office, a restaurant, and a couple of specialty businesses inside of its borders. However, it is just a short drive away from the more urban Town of Riverhead. Most of the children in Laurel attend school in the Mattituck-Cutchogue School District.
