East Marion

East Marion is a sleepy hamlet with a year-round population of less than 1,000 people scattered across 2.2-miles of land that lies sandwiched between Greenport and Orient, much of which is made up of inlets, preserves and farmland.

The first inhabitants of this area can be traced to 1000 BC. However, those early peoples vanished long before the arrival, in about 900 AD, of the Corchaugs, who called the area Poquatuc. The Corchaugs were still present when six English families settled here in 1661. The new residents called the area Oysterponds because of the abundant shellfish that they began to gather and sell to nearby communities.

British troops landed in 1776 during the American Revolutionary War. Many families fled to Connecticut, and the Redcoats periodically plundered the farms they left behind. After Benedict Arnold switched sides, he organized raids on Connecticut from Oysterponds.

Oysterponds originally encompassed both East Marion and Orient, to the east. In 1836, the two communities went their separate ways with their new names. East Marion was named for Revolutionary War General, Francis Marion, also known as The Swamp Fox. "East" was tacked onto Marion because there was an existing Marion upstate.

East Marion is home to some of the North Fork’s greatest treasures, including an historic farm stand, charming churches and homes, and the picturesque views from Truman’s Beach and Dam Pond, the subject of many paintings.

Students in East Marion attend Oysterponds Elementary School, located on the Main Road in Orient, until sixth grade. They then attend Greenport for the remainder of their school career.
